This has nothing to do with this post, but one of Ann Rice’s very best books is “Cry to Heaven”. The story revolves around life as castrati.

Must be they like the sound of my voice. I can think of no other reason why they would ask my opinion so very, very often when the outcome is so very, very often the same. And that outcome? Procedure R.S.T.U.V-rev3.7 does not allow that to be done on Thursdays unless approved by the originator of Form Z-67rev4.6, co-signed by … But they will surely come back next week and ask for my opinion again! Except then Procedure R.S.T.U.V-rev3.7 will have been modified to rev 3.8 and will require approval from both the originator’s direct supervisor and the IT director of the site at which the common server upon which the form is located … Just wait until the week after that and you find out the requirements of rev 3.9!

So they pay me more and more to offer my opinion yet put more and more impediments in place to actually follow the advice I offer. Bureaucratic castration, it is the bane of all corporations that are allowed to grow without control. But then, it is really fun to watch when the bureaucrat who wrote Procedure R.S.T.U is told he cannot do what he needs to do because he has not followed his own procedure, has not filled out the correct forms, has not gotten appropriate approvals, … And I get to keep on singing. Who knows, enough practice and I might actually get good at this. Maybe I am sick and perverted, but sometimes I actually enjoy the singing even if they don’t listen.

Is Still Here
