People can be so blind to biological reality. When faced with realities of life that they find inconvenient to believe they just chose to suspend logic. As reported be Jessica O’Reilly on the site Carnal Nation, a new study by Dr. Sinikka Elliott of North Carolina State University reveals that parents of teens believe that all adolescents are sexual with the exception of their own children. The full report is published in the May issue of Symbolic Interaction.
While teens overall were perceived as hypersexual, the parents in the study viewed their own children as prey to other oversexed predatory teens. For example, parents of male teens were concerned that young women would lure their passive young men into sex in order to solidify relationships. By contrast, parents of young women felt that male teens might take advantage of their unknowing and sexually disinterested daughters.
If this attitude is in fact so prevalent, is it any wonder that the teen pregnancy rate is so high? If parents honestly believe that their kids have no interest in sex and that their only issue is protection against all those other parent’s predatory, sex-craved monsters, then they certainly are not teaching their own kids proper pregnancy avoidance techniques. How these parents can be so delusional is beyond me. But the results do seem consistent with what we observe. Perhaps it is human nature to want to believe that your teenaged children are still the cute and cuddly little bundles that were totally dependent upon you when they were infants. Remember, it has not been that many generations since they would be raising their own families. It is only the progression of modern culture that has changed this. Biology has not changed.
