Our world is a bit of a dreamworld. We know this from following news and some very nice people on Twitter, most notably Dr. Petra Boynton. Because we have been together for almost forty years, we have been most thankfully saved from the stress and strain for the shark-pit of the “dating pool”.
We have vague memories of the dating world prior to our joining. But that was a much more innocent time. Actually it was the transition time of the late sixties and early seventies. There might have been some fear of STI’s among our social group, but unplanned pregnancy was by far the biggest fear. Among our peers, pregnancy was what scared us most. HIV/AIDS existed, but had not even heard of the disease. We would occasionally hear of someone contracting syphilis or gonorrhea, but they would quietly receive treatment with antibiotics and no more would be heard of the infection. And to be honest, we probably became sexually active at a later age than young people today and were most of us were less adventuresome in general.
Today, the fastest growing group of people contracting and spreading STD/STI’s are Senior Citizens. Our current, and our planned future, lifestyle means this is not a personal concern for us. Between age, illness and medical treatments all forms of birth control have long since left our lives, including condoms. It is actually very liberating. Sex with no consequences! Remember, we live in a dreamworld.
Damn good thing we love each other so much. Life outside of our dreamworld sounds scary and complicated. It is much better here with just us two.
